This page collects 4 fully funded undergraduate scholarships in Russia for Nigerian students. Every award here is tagged as fully funded, and every one of them is open at bachelors level. That is a small, specific list rather than a general directory, so it is worth reading each entry in full before you decide where to spend your time and your money.
Russia is a long way from Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt, and the application process reflects that distance. Documents travel by courier, transcripts attract fees, and translations may be requested. The point of this page is to put the four awards in one place so you can compare what they actually say about money, documents and timing.
All 4 awards are labelled fully funded. Within that group, the individual award pages state the following in their own text:
Read those as what the awards write, not as a promise. A stipend described as covering living expenses is not the same as a stipend that covers everything you will spend in a Russian winter. Before you accept a place, work out the gap between the stated support and your real monthly costs, then decide whether you can close it.
The four entries are:
Two of the four sit under government schemes, and two are attached to named institutions. That split matters when you are choosing a city, a language of instruction and a course that will still be useful to you when you come home.
On this page, 4 awards do not state a nationality rule either way. That means the eligibility text on those award pages does not name Nigeria, does not name a region that includes Nigeria, and does not say the award is open to all nationalities. It simply does not address nationality.
Do not read silence as a yes. Treat it as something to confirm. Open each award page, look for the words that describe who may apply, and if the wording is still unclear, write to the address given on that page and ask directly whether a Nigerian secondary school leaver is eligible for the coming intake. Keep the reply.
For this level, the qualification that leads in is your senior secondary result. The pathway into an undergraduate award is: you finished secondary school, with WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or SSCE results. Most awards at this level ask for your senior secondary results and an admission offer, and each award page quotes its own entry requirement. Read the requirement on the page you are applying to, not on a forum.
One award on this list states that it asks for letters of recommendation. That is the only requirement counted across the four. It does not mean the others ask for nothing — it means the other award pages do not state that requirement in their text. Assume nothing and check each page.
In practice, prepare the documents that travel well and take time to obtain:
Budget for transcripts and courier fees out of your own pocket. These are the costs that catch Nigerian applicants out, and they are not covered by any award on this page.
None of the four awards carries a fixed closing date on this page. All 4 are undated here, which means the listing does not show a single calendar date you can diarise. Instead, the award pages describe windows.
The Russian Government Scholarship and the Russian Government Quota Scholarship both describe applications that usually open in November and close in February or February/March for the next academic year. The MEPhI award describes applications that typically open between November and February. The HSE University award says deadlines vary by programme, generally between January and August.
Because the dates move, work backwards from the window rather than forwards from today. If a window opens in November, your documents should be ready in October. That gives you time to chase a transcript, correct a name mismatch on a certificate, or replace a lost document without missing the opening.
Russia is an established destination. According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, 1,950 Nigerian students were studying in Russia in 2023, placing Nigeria eighth among the countries sending students there. That is a real community, and it means there are people who have already done the paperwork you are about to start.
It also means the competition is not imaginary. A quota scheme that draws applicants from many countries will not treat a late or incomplete file kindly.
Start with the two government schemes, because they are the broadest in what they state they cover and in the number of institutions they mention. Then read the two university awards, which are narrower but more specific about where you would study.
For each award you are serious about, do four things in this order. First, confirm eligibility in writing if the page does not name Nigeria. Second, list every document the page asks for and mark which ones you already hold. Third, note the application window and set your own internal deadline two months earlier. Fourth, check whether the award expects a separate admission application to the university as well as the scholarship application — these are often two different steps with two different closing points.
Keep a single folder, physical or digital, with one subfolder per award. Name each file clearly. When a window opens in November, you want to be uploading documents, not searching for them.
