About this list

Undergraduate Scholarships for Nigerian Students in Canada, explained

Written from the 14 awards on this page — every figure below is counted from what the awards themselves state. 5 min read.

What this page lists

This page collects 14 undergraduate scholarships in Canada open to students applying for a first degree. Every award on the list is at bachelors level, and every one is in Canada. The providers named include the University of Toronto, York University, McGill University, the University of Waterloo, Université de Montréal and The University of Winnipeg.

Seven of the 14 are labelled fully funded by the award itself. One is labelled partially funded. Six do not state their funding either way, so this page does not describe what those six cover. Where an award names a benefit in its own text, three name tuition, one names living costs and one names accommodation.

If you are working through the list, start with the funding label, then read the eligibility wording on the individual award page. The label tells you how the provider describes the award. The eligibility wording tells you whether you can apply.

Who the awards are for

These are scholarships for a first degree abroad. The route in is your senior secondary result: WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or SSCE. Most of the awards ask for those results and an admission offer; each award page quotes its own entry requirement, so the exact wording matters more than the general pattern.

On eligibility, 8 of the 14 awards are open to Nigerian applicants. Of those eight, none names Nigeria or the region in its eligibility text, and all eight carry no nationality restriction. The remaining six do not state their eligibility on the award page at all, so treat those as unresolved until you read the full listing.

Canada is not a small destination for Nigerian students. The UNESCO Institute for Statistics recorded 12,072 Nigerian students in Canada in 2023, the third-largest group in the country. That figure is context, not a selection advantage.

What the awards pay for

Funding labels vary, and so does what sits behind them. Seven awards are described as fully funded. One is described as partially funded. Six do not say.

Among the awards that name a specific benefit in their own text, tuition appears three times, living costs once and accommodation once. Those counts tell you what the award text mentions, not what every recipient receives. An award that names tuition may leave your flights, visa fees, health cover and day-to-day spending to you.

Two examples show how differently Canadian awards are structured. The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program at the University of Toronto is listed as fully funded. The Carleton University Entrance Awards for International Students is an entrance award spread over the length of a degree programme. Read the value section of each page rather than assuming the label settles it.

What the applications ask for

The requirements stated on these awards are administrative more than dramatic, and they are the part Nigerian applicants most often underestimate.

  • Letters of recommendation: 4 awards ask for them.
  • An English test score (IELTS or TOEFL): 3 awards ask for one.
  • A minimum degree class: 2 awards state one.
  • An admission offer first: 1 award requires it before you can be considered.

Letters of recommendation take the longest to arrange. A teacher or principal who taught you two years ago may have moved, and a school that issues references only on certain days will slow you down. Ask early, give the writer your results and your intended programme, and follow up in person if you can.

On English tests, check whether the award accepts a waiver before you pay for a test date. Some Canadian institutions accept senior secondary English results or a medium-of-instruction letter in place of IELTS or TOEFL. That is decided by the institution, not by this page, so confirm it in writing with the admissions office.

Deadlines and how they fall

Deadlines on this list are unevenly documented. One award carries a dated deadline, one is still open, one recurs, and thirteen are undated on the listing. January is the busiest month, with one award closing then.

The award closing soonest is the UBC Undergraduate Scholarships 2026-2027, which closes on 15 January, 99 days from now.

Two others are worth reading now because their timing shapes your whole application. The York University Scholarships 2027 page ties its funding to a Fall 2026 admission deadline of 15 February 2026. The McGill University Scholarships and Fellowships 2026-2027 page works off admission deadlines rather than a separate scholarship date. Where a scholarship follows the admission deadline, missing the admission deadline ends the scholarship question too.

Where a deadline is undated, open the award page and check the provider's own site. An undated listing is not an open listing.

Other awards on the same page

The list is not only for bachelors applicants. Alongside the 14 undergraduate awards, the same collection includes 6 masters awards, 3 PhD awards, 1 fellowship and 1 short course. If you are finishing a first degree and thinking about a second, those are worth a separate pass.

By subject, the field breakdown is thin: one award each in Arts & Humanities, Business & Management and Social Sciences. Most of the 14 are open across faculties or tied to a particular university's entrance requirements rather than a single department.

Durations vary by programme. One award runs 3-4 years depending on the programme selected. Another covers 4 years for an undergraduate and 2 years for a master's. A third runs for 1 year with funding split across the fall and winter semesters. Check the duration against your own study plan before you commit to a provider.

What to do next

Work in this order and you will not waste money on documents you do not need.

Fourteen awards is a workable list. The applicants who get through it are usually the ones who started on the documents early and read each award's own wording rather than relying on the summary.
