About this list

Business & Management Scholarships for Nigerian Students, explained

Written from the 26 awards on this page — every figure below is counted from what the awards themselves state. 5 min read.

What this page lists

This page collects 26 scholarships in Business & Management that are open to Nigerian students. They range from undergraduate awards for school leavers to PhD funding for candidates who already hold a master's degree. The list is not limited to one country or one type of award, and it is not limited to programmes that call themselves an MBA.

Of the 26, 18 are fully funded and 5 are partially funded. The remaining awards do not label their funding either way, so treat those as unknown until you read the individual page. What matters more than the label is what each award actually pays for, and that is set out further down.

Where the awards are, and at what level

The United Kingdom carries the largest share with 7 awards, followed by China with 4 and the United States with 4. Australia and the Netherlands each hold 2, Switzerland holds 2, and Canada, Ireland, Japan, Norway and Singapore hold 1 each. That spread matters when you are weighing cost of living, visa timelines and how far your transcript has to travel by courier.

By study level, the list is weighted towards postgraduate study:

  • Masters — 20 awards
  • Bachelors — 12 awards
  • PhD — 9 awards
  • Fellowship — 2 awards
  • High School — 1 award

Some awards appear under more than one level, which is why the numbers above add up to more than 26. A scholarship that funds both a master's and a doctorate is counted at both levels. Read the individual page before you assume a level applies to you.

What the awards say they cover

Funding descriptions vary widely, and the counts below reflect what the awards state in their own text. They are not a promise that every recipient receives every item.

  • Tuition — named by 12 awards
  • Living costs — named by 8 awards
  • Travel — named by 5 awards
  • Accommodation — named by 5 awards
  • Health insurance — named by 3 awards
  • Research or training costs — named by 2 awards

A tuition-only award still leaves you to find living costs, flights, visa fees and the cost of shipping your documents. If an award names living costs but not travel, budget for the flight yourself. Where an award names nothing beyond tuition, assume nothing else is included.

Can a Nigerian applicant apply?

This is the question most readers come to the page with, so here is the breakdown. 17 of the 26 awards are open to Nigerians. Within that 17, 2 name Nigeria or the region directly, and 15 carry no nationality restriction. Those two figures describe the same group of 17, not separate groups on top of it.

A further 9 awards do not state their eligibility on the award page at all. That does not mean you are excluded, and it does not mean you qualify. It means the information is not on the page, and you will need to check the provider's own eligibility rules before you spend money on a transcript or a courier.

What the applications ask for

The requirements below are counted from what the awards state in writing. They tell you what to prepare, and roughly how much of your budget and time each stage will take.

  • Letters of recommendation — asked for by 10 awards
  • An English test score (IELTS or TOEFL) — 8 awards
  • Work experience — 4 awards
  • A minimum degree class — 3 awards
  • An admission offer first — 3 awards
  • A research proposal — 1 award

Recommendation letters are the single most common requirement, and they are also the slowest to organise from Nigeria. Approach your referees early, give them the exact deadline, and follow up in person rather than by email alone. Where a minimum degree class is stated, read the wording carefully: a Nigerian Second Class Upper is not automatically read as the equivalent of a UK 2:1 by every admissions office, and some providers will ask for a transcript evaluation.

Where an award asks for an admission offer first, the scholarship deadline is not your real deadline. The university's admission deadline comes before it, and that is the date you must work backwards from.

Deadlines and how they fall

12 awards carry a stated date, and 12 are currently still open. 14 are undated, and 12 recur, meaning the same award runs again on a yearly cycle. The busiest months are April, October and May, with 2 deadlines falling in each.

The awards closing soonest are listed here. Each links to its own page.

An undated award is not an award without a deadline. It usually means the date has not been published yet, or that applications run on a rolling basis. Check the provider page directly rather than assuming the window is closed.

What to do next

Start with eligibility, not with prestige. Filter the list down to the awards where Nigerians may apply, then remove anything that asks for a qualification or a test score you cannot produce in time. What remains is your working list.

Then work backwards from each deadline. If a recommendation letter is required, count at least three weeks for a referee to respond and another week for any follow-up. If an English test is required, book the test date before you write the application, because the score has to be in hand, not pending. If an admission offer is required first, the university deadline is the one that governs your calendar.

Keep your documents in one place. Transcripts, degree certificates, your NYSC discharge certificate where relevant, and a current CV are requested repeatedly, and requesting a fresh transcript for every application is the fastest way to exhaust your budget. Where an award does not state its eligibility, contact the provider before you pay for anything.

Finally, read each award page in full. The counts on this page tell you what is common across the 26. The individual page tells you what that one award actually requires from you.
