Fully Funded Fellowship Scholarships for Nigerian Students in the United States, explained

Written from the 9 awards on this page — every figure below is counted from what the awards themselves state. 5 min read.

What this page lists

This page collects 9 fully funded fellowship scholarships in the United States. Every award here is labelled fully funded, and every one is a fellowship. They are not all at the same study level, and that is the first thing to understand before you start reading individual pages.

Five of the nine are open at postdoctoral level. Four are open at master's level, two at PhD level, two at high school level, one at bachelor's level and one as a short course. Some awards sit at more than one level at once, which is why those numbers add up to more than nine. The providers named in this collection include the American Association of University Women, the Clark Art Institute, the ACI Foundation, the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, the National Endowment for Democracy and the University of Minnesota.

Who can apply

Four of the nine awards are open to Nigerian applicants on the terms stated on the award itself. None of those four names Nigeria or the West African region specifically; all four simply carry no nationality restriction. For the other five, the award page does not state an eligibility position on nationality at all.

That distinction matters when you are planning. An award that says nothing about nationality is not the same as an award that excludes you, and it is not the same as an award that welcomes you. Where the position is not stated, the only reliable step is to read the full award page and, if it is still unclear, write to the provider and ask directly. Do that early, not in the week the application closes.

Nigerian students are a large presence in the United States. The UNESCO Institute for Statistics put the number of Nigerian students there at 16,632 in 2023, the second-largest group from any country. You are not applying into an empty room, and the competition for fellowship places reflects that.

What the awards pay for

All nine are fully funded. Beyond that headline, what each award actually covers varies, and the differences are worth reading carefully because "fully funded" is used loosely across the sector.

Of the nine, five name living costs in their own text. Four name travel. Two name health insurance. One names tuition, one names accommodation, and one names research or training costs. These are the benefits the awards state in writing, not a promise that every award covers every line. Where an award does not name a benefit, treat it as something to confirm with the provider rather than something to assume.

For a Nigerian applicant paying for transcripts, courier fees and test registration out of pocket, the practical question is not only what is covered but when it is covered. An award that pays living costs from the start of the fellowship year still leaves you to fund the months between accepting an offer and arriving. Budget for that gap separately.

What the applications demand

The requirements across this collection are consistent enough to plan around. Six of the nine ask for letters of recommendation. Three ask for an English test score, IELTS or TOEFL. Two state a minimum degree class. One asks for work experience, one for a research proposal, and one for a commitment to return home afterwards.

Letters of recommendation are the single most common requirement here, and they are also the slowest thing to arrange from Nigeria. Professors move institutions, departmental email addresses go dead, and a referee who agrees in principle may take three weeks to actually write. Ask early, ask two more people than you need, and give each referee your CV, your transcript and a short note on what the fellowship is for.

Where an English test is required, note that the requirement sits on the award, not on you as a Nigerian applicant. Some providers waive it for applicants who studied in English, but that waiver is theirs to grant and is not automatic. If the award page does not mention a waiver, do not assume one exists.

Two awards state a minimum degree class. Nigerian applicants should read that against their own result: a Second Class Upper, a Second Class Lower, an HND distinction or an M.Sc classification are not interchangeable across providers, and the award page is the only place that settles which one applies.

Deadlines and how they fall

Six of the nine awards carry a date. Six are still open at the time of writing, and six recur, meaning the cycle repeats and a missed deadline is usually a delay rather than a dead end. Three awards in this collection are undated, so the page itself does not give you a closing date to work with.

The busiest months across this set are June, October and November. The awards closing soonest are:

Also in the set is the Helen Hay Whitney Fellowships for Postdoctoral Research 2027, which closes 16 June.

Fellowship durations vary. One award runs a fellowship year from 1 July to 30 June. Another runs between one and ten months. One runs across three academic years. Read the duration before you plan around an award, because a ten-month fellowship and a three-year one will shape your life in the United States very differently.

Fields represented here

The subject spread on this page is narrow. One award sits in arts and humanities, one in business and management, and one in social sciences. That is not the whole picture of what is available to Nigerian students in the United States, only what this particular collection contains.

If your field is not represented, the sensible move is to browse the wider fellowship listings on this site rather than force a fit with an award built for a different discipline. A research proposal written for the wrong panel wastes the months you spent on it.

What to do next

Start with the deadline that is closest and work backwards. If you are aiming at the Clark Art Institute Fellowship, the 15 October date leaves very little room, and letters of recommendation alone can take longer than that. If your target is the ACI Foundation or the University of Minnesota, you have more time, but the same documents are needed.

Work through this sequence for each award you shortlist. Confirm whether the award is open to Nigerian applicants on its own terms, and write to the provider if the page does not say. Confirm what the funding covers in writing, and identify what you will still have to pay for yourself. Confirm the degree class or English test requirement, and check whether a waiver applies to you. Then line up your referees before you open the application form.

Three of the nine awards in this collection do not state a deadline, and five do not state a nationality position. Those gaps are not obstacles, but they are work. Treat each one as a question to be answered before you invest weeks in an application.
