About this list

Fully Funded PhD Engineering Scholarships Open to Nigerian Students, explained

Written from the 9 awards on this page — every figure below is counted from what the awards themselves state. 5 min read.

What this page lists

This page collects 9 fully funded PhD engineering scholarships open to Nigerian students. Every one of the nine is labelled fully funded by the provider, and every one is a doctoral award. They are hosted in six countries: China, Australia, Canada, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

The list is narrow on purpose. It is not a general funding directory. Each entry is a doctoral place in engineering, and each is open to a Nigerian applicant either because Nigeria or the wider region is named in the eligibility text, or because the award states no nationality restriction at all. Of the nine, 1 names Nigeria or the region, and 8 carry no nationality restriction. No award on this page leaves eligibility unstated, so you are not guessing about whether you may apply.

Where the awards are

China carries the largest share with 3 awards. Australia follows with 2. Canada, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United States each hold 1.

That spread matters when you are budgeting. A Chinese or Singaporean doctorate usually means a single application cycle with a defined start date. Australian and Canadian doctoral programmes often begin with a supervisor conversation before the funding paperwork. The United States entry on this list is a university-wide award rather than a national scheme, so the department you apply through will shape your chances as much as the scholarship office does.

Engineering is the only field on this page, but the same providers also fund other subjects. If your research sits between engineering and another discipline, it is worth checking whether the wider award covers your area before you rule it out.

What the awards pay for

Fully funded means different things at different institutions. Read what each award says in writing rather than assuming.

  • Tuition is named by 4 of the 9 awards.
  • Living costs are named by 4.
  • Travel is named by 3.
  • Research or training costs are named by 2.
  • Accommodation is named by 1.
  • Health insurance is named by 1.
  • A settling-in or arrival grant is named by 1.

Those counts describe what appears in the award text. They are not a promise that the remaining awards pay nothing — only that the benefit is not spelled out in the wording we hold. Where an award does state a figure, treat it as the provider's own published rate, not a fixed sum for the length of your degree. The University of Tasmania Scholarship, for example, publishes a per annum rate and notes that it is indexed annually on 1 January, so the amount you receive in your third year will not match your first.

Do you qualify?

The entry qualification for this level is a master's degree. In Nigerian terms that means an M.Sc, M.A, MBA or M.Phil, and the doctoral awards here sit above that. A good B.Sc or HND alone will not carry you into a PhD application, though it will matter for the transcript and class standing you submit alongside the master's.

Two of the nine awards state a minimum degree class in their own requirements. Where a class is named, it is usually expressed in the provider's own grading language, so check how your Nigerian classification maps before you assume you are short. If you are unsure, ask the admissions office directly — it is a short email and it costs nothing.

One award on this page requires an admission offer before you can apply for the funding. That reverses the usual order. You would need to be accepted onto the doctoral programme first, then apply for the scholarship. Plan that sequence early, because the admission decision will not wait for you.

What the applications ask for

The paperwork is where most Nigerian applicants lose time rather than lose the award. Across the nine:

  • Letters of recommendation — required by 5.
  • An English test score (IELTS or TOEFL) — required by 3.
  • A research proposal — required by 3.
  • A minimum degree class — stated by 2.
  • An admission offer first — required by 1.

Start with the English test if you need one. Booking, sitting and receiving the score takes weeks, and the result has to reach the provider before the deadline, not after. If you studied your master's in English, ask whether a waiver applies — some providers grant one, and it saves both the fee and the waiting time.

Recommendation letters are the second bottleneck. Approach your referees with the deadline in writing, and give them your CV and research summary so they are not writing blind. Three of the awards also want a research proposal, which is the document that most often decides a doctoral application. Write it around a specific supervisor's work where you can, because funded doctoral places are frequently tied to a supervisor or a research group, and the programme application and the scholarship application can share a single deadline.

Deadlines and how they fall

Four of the nine awards publish a date, four are still open, and five are undated. Four run on a recurring cycle, which means the same window opens again each year. The busiest months across the list are October with 2 deadlines, then April and June with 1 each.

The four closing soonest are:

Two more entries on the list run on windows rather than a single date. The Shanghai Government Scholarship accepts applications between January and June of each year. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is anticipated before November 2026 for the coming cycle, and it is administered through a Canadian institution that holds a quota to host Vanier scholars — so your first step is finding whether your intended department has that quota.

What to do next

Work backwards from the deadline, not forwards from today. If an award closes in October, your references, transcripts and English score need to be settled well before then, because Nigerian transcript processing and courier delivery take time you cannot compress at the end.

Shortlist two or three awards rather than applying to all nine. A doctoral application is a research document, and a proposal written for a Chinese university's engineering faculty will not read well to a Canadian committee. Match the proposal to the department.

Then confirm the two things that decide most outcomes: whether the award requires you to hold an admission offer before you apply, and whether a supervisor has to agree to take you on. Both change the order in which you do everything else.

Read each award's own page before you commit. The counts above tell you what the nine awards say in writing about funding and requirements. They do not replace the provider's terms, and those terms are what you will be held to.
