About this list

Scholarships Open to Nigerian Students in Sweden, explained

Written from the 5 awards on this page — every figure below is counted from what the awards themselves state. 6 min read.

What this page lists

This collection gathers 5 scholarships in Sweden that are open to Nigerian students. Every award on the page is at one Swedish institution or funded through a Swedish programme, and every one of them accepts applications from Nigerian nationals. That last point matters more than it sounds. A great many European scholarships are tied to a region, a partner-university list or a specific development-cooperation country, and Nigeria is often not on it. Here, the filter has already been applied.

The awards come from four named providers: Chalmers University of Technology, Mid Sweden University, Linköping University and Dalarna University. One further entry, the Swedish Scholarships for International Students (SISGP) 2027, is a national programme rather than a single university scheme.

Who can apply, and how the eligibility breaks down

Of the 5 awards, 2 name Nigeria or the wider region in their own eligibility text. The other 3 carry no nationality restriction at all, which means a Nigerian applicant competes on the same terms as everyone else. No award on this page leaves eligibility unstated.

That split is worth understanding before you spend money on a transcript courier. An award that names Nigeria or the region is usually working from a fixed list, and your nationality is doing part of the work for you. An award with no nationality restriction is open, but so is the applicant pool — you will be read against candidates from everywhere. Neither is better. They simply demand different things from your application.

Sweden also runs a central admissions system, and most master's applications there move through it rather than through a university's own portal. Check which route each award uses before you start uploading documents.

What the awards actually pay for

Funding labels on this page are uneven, and it is better to know that upfront. 2 awards are labelled partially funded and 1 is labelled fully funded. A further 2 do not state their funding level either way — for those, the only reliable information is on the individual award page, so read it there rather than assuming.

Where the awards do describe their benefits in writing:

  • 4 mention tuition
  • 2 mention living costs
  • 2 mention travel
  • 1 mentions health insurance

These are the benefits the awards name in their own text. They are not a promise that every successful applicant receives every item, and they are not a guarantee of any particular amount. Swedish tuition for non-EU students is charged in SEK and is not cheap; a partial award that covers tuition and nothing else still leaves you responsible for rent, food, insurance and the flight. Work out that gap in naira before you apply, not after you are admitted.

Which subjects and which level

4 of the 5 awards are at master's level. That is the dominant route on this page, and it fits the qualification most Nigerian applicants will be holding — a B.Sc or HND, or an M.Sc if you are returning for a second degree.

The subject spread is one award each across five fields:

  • Arts & Humanities
  • Computer Science & IT
  • Energy & Environment
  • Engineering
  • Natural Sciences

So this is not a page for one discipline. If you read engineering, computer science or the environmental sciences, there is a Swedish award here aimed at your field. If you read in the humanities, there is one too, though with a single award the competition will be concentrated.

What the applications demand

The requirements the awards state in writing are the part Nigerian applicants most often underestimate, because each one costs money or time to satisfy.

  • 3 awards ask for letters of recommendation. Approach your referees early. A Nigerian lecturer writing for a dozen students in the same month will not produce a tailored letter quickly.
  • 2 awards ask for an English test score — IELTS or TOEFL. Book the test before you need it. Slots in Lagos and Abuja fill, and results take time to reach you.
  • 2 awards ask for work experience. If you are applying straight from NYSC, read those two carefully before spending on anything else.
  • 1 award asks for a minimum degree class. Check your transcript against it honestly rather than hopefully.

Note that only 2 of the 5 state an English test requirement. That does not automatically mean the others waive it — some may accept a medium-of-instruction letter from your university, and some may simply not have stated their position. Ask the department directly rather than assuming a waiver.

Deadlines and how the year falls

Deadlines on this page are spread and, in several cases, incomplete. 1 award carries a firm date, 1 is still open, 1 recurs annually, and 4 are undated on the listing. January is the busiest month, with 1 award closing then.

The award closing soonest is the Adlerbert Study Scholarships 2026-2027 at Chalmers University of Technology, which closes 15 January. That is the one to open first if you are reading this in the months before it.

The other four, in brief:

Two things follow from that pattern. First, the Swedish cycle runs on its own calendar, and the January university-admission deadline sits ahead of most scholarship deadlines — you may need to be admitted, or at least applying, before the funding clock starts. Second, four undated listings are not four closed listings. Open each one and confirm the date on the award page itself.

Why Sweden, and what the numbers say

Sweden is not the first country most Nigerian students think of, which is precisely why the applicant pool can be thinner than for the UK or Canada. According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, 412 Nigerian students were studying in Sweden in 2024, placing Nigeria 29th among sending countries. That is a small, established presence rather than a crowded one.

Swedish master's programmes also tend to run longer than the British one-year model. Among the awards here, one is described as 2 years (120 credits) and another as 1–2 years. A two-year programme means two years of living costs to plan for, and it means any partial award has to stretch further.

What to do next

Start with the Chalmers award, since it is the only one on the page with a confirmed closing date. Then work through the other four and write down, for each, the answers to three questions: does it name a nationality restriction, does it state a funding level, and does it state a deadline. Where the answer is missing, treat it as unknown and ask the university.

In parallel, get the slow items moving. Request transcripts from your Nigerian university now — the processing and courier time is the part you cannot compress later. Ask your referees for the three letters. Book an IELTS or TOEFL date if any of your target awards asks for one. Confirm whether your degree class meets the single award that specifies a minimum.

Five awards is a small list, and that is the honest picture. It is also a list where every entry has already cleared the nationality question, which is more than most Swedish scholarship lists will give you.
